The Mercure typeface, by Charles Mazé and distributed by foundry Abyme, has its origins in 19th century epigraphic typefaces, designed to transcribe lapidary inscriptions, engraved in matters such as wood, steel or stone. The Transcript version, used for the composition of the guide's titles, evokes, through various aspects of its design, the fragmented, damaged or missing matter of these inscriptions. The values of the margins, the density of the running text block and the format create a tense relationship between full and empty, two notions cherished by sculptor Antoine Bourdelle.
